Hvordan opplever nyutdannede sykepleiere overgangen til arbeidslivet?

Abstract

NORSK: Bakgrunn: Oppgaven handler om hvordan nyutdannede sykepleiere opplever overgangen til arbeidslivet, med utgangspunkt i egne forventninger og fremtidige arbeidsgivere og kollegaers forventninger. Hensikt: Å belyse hvordan nyutdannede sykepleiere opplever overgangen til arbeids-­‐ livet, og hvorvidt de ulike forventningene i tilknytning til dette er realistiske eller ikke. Metode: Oppgaven er en litteraturstudie, basert på 5 vitenskapelige forskningsartikler. Søkeordene som ble benyttet for å finne artiklene var: newly graduated nurses, nures, nursing, expectations, colleagues expectations, employers expectations, managing, coping. Resultater: Nyutdannede sykepleiere opplever et ”overgangssjokk” i overgangen fra student til ferdig sykepleier. Det viser seg også at forventninger om å jobbe etter tillærte idealer og verdier, samt å jobbe evidensbasert, kan være urealistisk i møte med arbeidslivet. Nyutdannede sykepleiere har også urealistiske forventninger i forhold til behovet for støtte og veiledning etter endt utdanning. Samtidig har arbeidsgivere og kollegaer urealistiske forventninger til den nyutdannede sykepleierens selvstendighet og ferdighetsnivå. Konklusjon: Det er et gap mellom utdanning og yrke når det gjelder sykepleieprofesjonen. Dette gapet kan skyldes at utdanningsinstitusjoner for sykepleie har en annen tilnærming til faget enn hva den nyutdannede sykepleieren faktisk opplever i møtet med arbeidslivet. Samtidig kan det se ut til at arbeidsgivere ikke legger til rette i tilstrekkelig grad når det gjelder å introdusere nyutdannede sykepleiere til arbeidslivet, blant annet på grunn av økonomiske rammer og begrensede ressurser.

ENGLISH: Background: This paper describes how newly educated nurses experience the transition into the professional nursing role. This includes their own expectations, as well as the expectations of future employers and colleagues. Objective: Describing newly graduated nurses transition into the professional nursing role, and to what extent those expectations in this matter are realistic. Method: This thesis is a literature study, based on 5 academic research articles. The keywords used in the searching for articles: newly graduated nurses, nurses, nursing expectations, colleagues expectations, employers´ expectations, managing, coping. Results: Newly graduated nurses experience a “transition shock” when turning from their student role into professional nursing. Expectations related to being a nurse based on ideals and values, as well as working evidencebased, might be unrealistic as they take on the professional nursing role. Newly educated nurses also have unrealistic expectations on their needs for support and guidance after graduation. At the same time employers and colleagues have unrealistic expectations on newly graduated nurses when it comes to independency and skill level. Conclusion: There is a gap between nursing education and the nursing profession. This gap might be related to the fact that the education sector has a different approach towards the nursing role than what the newly graduated nurses experience as they take on the professional nursing role. On the other hand it might seem like employers do not facilitate adequately the introduction of newly graduated nurses into their new role. This might be a consequence of limited economical frames and a general lack of recourses.
